About the Artist

Susan Hutchison BA(Hons)

I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee with an honours degree in Illustration & Printmaking in 1990.

For over ten years I worked as a Freelance Illustrator and during this time I completed a large number of commissions, including full book illustration for Publishers such as Scholastic, Oxford University Press and Orchard.

I also have illustration experience working on commercial advertising for national companies as well as Public Art Commissions, including bespoke museum and art gallery illustrations for a permanent local history exhibition for Dundee City Council.

In recent years I have exhibited my work at the following galleries and institutions:-

The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art

Fotheringham Gallery, Dunblane

Smithy Gallery, Blanefield

Orchar Gallery, Dundee

By Distinction Art, Glasgow

Bass Rock Gallery, Dunbar

516 Gallery, Glasgow

Morningside Gallery, Edinburgh

Torrance gallery, Edinburgh

Combining fine art painting with teaching art & design, I work from my studio located in the new WASPS Creative Exchange in Perth.

Working with oil paints and watercolours, my artwork reflects the surroundings in which I live. I take inspiration from the diverse local wildlife and enjoy creating representational depictions of the fox, hare, mice & bird life.

Having lived in an agricultural community I also paint the many different breeds of sheep and cattle found in the local area, and enjoy capturing their unique characters, using fine detail, manipulating the paint to achieve each ‘portrait’.

Dog breeds also feature frequently in my work and I have enjoyed elevating ‘man’s best friend’ to fine art status.

Still life & portraiture also form part of my extensive portfolio of art, and many of these are held in private collections.

Whether I’m painting a large prize bull or a tiny field mouse I always endeavour to capture the essence of the subject in fine detail utilising my own unique style.
